Safety first, no exemptions!

Even if you’re a seasoned pirate with a hook hand, our safety rules are strict.

for safety

Safety is the foundation of our fencing practice. Every student is expected to follow a set of essential rules to ensure a respectful and secure environment.

Fencing safety starts with respect—fencers must salute before and shake hands after each bout. Wild slashing, taunting, and trash talk are not allowed; repeated offenses may result in loss of weapon privileges. Weapons must always be pointed down when not in use and never directed at an unmasked person. Any unsafe behavior means the student will be removed from practice. Safety, respect, and control are always the top priorities.

This is why fencing is safer than badminton. You don’t believe me? – Here’s the proof

More details about equipment and safety

Fencing Mask

Fencing masks are designed to withstand significant force, passing a 12 kg punch test that equates to about 188 N (newtons). The mesh prevents sword blades from penetrating, similar to the force of a thick door slamming shut, which is about 118 N.

Additionally, it features a padded bib to shield the throat. This mask must comply with FIE (International Fencing Federation) standards for competitive use.

Fencing Jacket

The fencing jacket is essential for safety, protecting the torso from blade contact. Made from thick, puncture-resistant fabric (often rated 350N or 800N) and layered with materials like cotton or Kevlar, it overlaps with the pants for full coverage. Additionally, it features a padded bib to shield the throat.

Jacket is designed to absorb poking impacts, not blunt force—fencing weapons bend on contact to reduce stress on the body. Even at Olympic levels, where impacts can reach 400 newtons, the jacket helps keep fencers safe. Thanks to this design and gear, fencing remains a very safe sport.

Fencing Gloves

Fencing gloves are designed to protect your weapon hand, which is often targeted during use. For safety reasons, they feature reinforced padding and an extended cuff for additional wrist protection.

These gloves are engineered to absorb impacts and prevent cuts, ensuring both safety and comfort while handling your weapon.

Fencing Weapon

Foil, épée, and sabre are the three weapons used in fencing to score points while prioritizing safety to minimize harm. For your safety, they are equipped with blunt tips, often made of rubber or designed with spring-loaded ends, and the blades are flexible, bending upon impact.

All sport fencing weapons are relatively light, weighing a maximum of 500 grams for foils and sabers and 775 grams for épées, which helps reduce the force of strikes.
